The Goats

1980 “Miracle on Ice” Team

The 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, composed entirely of amateur college players, improbably defeated the Soviet Union’s “Red Army” of professional players in Lake Placid, New York, 4-3. U.S. coach Herb Brooks led the team back from deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 to claim the win. As the seconds ticked down, broadcaster Al Michaels memorably asked the audience, “Do you believe in miracles?!?” Two days later, the Americans rallied to defeat Finland, 4-2, to win the gold medal.
