U.S. Presidents & First Ladies
Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson, born in 1767 on the Carolina frontier, overcame early orphanhood to become a lawyer and plantation owner. Nicknamed “Old Hickory” for his resilience as a general in the War of 1812, Jackson became a national hero after the Battle of New Orleans. Although he narrowly lost the 1824 election — the year in which this letter was written — he won in 1828 and served as the seventh president. Jackson expanded presidential power, dismantled the national bank and enforced the Indian Removal Act. Founder of the modern Democratic Party, he remained influential in politics until his death in 1845.
