U.S. Presidents & First Ladies

Barbara Bush

Born in 1925, Barbara Pierce met George H.W. Bush at age 16 at a Christmas dance and married him three years later. She supported George’s political career, including positions overseas, and grew to enjoy campaigning. As First Lady (1989–1993) Barbara championed literacy causes and hosted a story time program on ABC radio. Their son, George W. Bush, served as president from 2001 to 2009 as Barbara Bush became the second woman in American history along with Abigail Adams to be both wife and mother of a president. Barbara Bush, who wrote this letter in 1983 to a friend, passed away in 2018.

THE VICE PRESIDENT’S HOUSE
WASHINGTON, DC

1983 December 21

To Cy and Audrey,

A million thanks for the beautiful wreath. What a lovely thing for you to do — we loved seeing Cy on the football evening. What a great relaxed evening that was for us — Cy and Reds are quite a combination! We don’t see

enough of you two!

Have a Merry Christmas and a healthy-happy-prosperous New Year.

Affectionately & gratefully,

Barbara
