U.S. Presidents & First Ladies

Chester Arthur

Chester A. Arthur, born in Vermont in 1829, was a lawyer, Civil War quartermaster and New York political insider. His legal work helped end streetcar segregation in New York City and he held the key role of Collector for the Port of New York. This 1872 letter was from his legal work. Arthur joined the 1880 Republican ticket as vice president, becoming the 21st president after James Garfield’s assassination in 1881. Arthur modernized the U.S. Navy and surprised many by signing the Pendleton Act to reform civil service. Facing divided party support, Arthur left office in 1885 and died the following year.
