Dale Earnhardt, Sr. was one of the greatest drivers in stock car racing history. Nicknamed “The Intimidator” for his aggressive driving style, Dale Sr. won 100 races and seven NASCAR Cup series championships before he tragically passed during the 2001 Daytona 500, just weeks after this Sports Illustrated magazine cover with his son was published. Earnhardt’s death was the fourth in recent months and resulted in new safety protocols that have all but eliminated on-track crash fatalities. Dale Jr. took up the family business, winning 50 races including two Daytona 500s, while becoming one of NASCAR’s most popular drivers.
