Doak Walker
After brief stints in the Merchant Marine and the U.S. Army, Dallas-native Doak Walker starred for hometown school Southern Methodist University where he won the 1948 Heisman Trophy. As a pro with Detroit, Walker partnered with his high school teammate Bobby Layne to lead the Lions to three straight appearances in the NFL Championship Game, winning in 1952 and 1953. After retirement, Walker worked in sporting goods and founded a chemical company in Denver. As a testament to his great career, the Doak Walker Award is given annually to the best college running back.
