Barons of the Ballpark
Ernie Banks
“Let’s Play Two” was the infectious saying of Chicago Cubs shortstop Ernie Banks who earned the nickname “Mr. Cub.” The 14-time All-Star and two-time National League MVP got his start in the Negro leagues before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he for a time played for the Harlem Globetrotters! Banks was the first Black player for the Cubs in 1953, and his power made him one of the most feared hitters of his era. In this collection are a signed photo, a fan letter from 1961 and a note to Jack Krasula in 1977.

Hi Johnny,
So nice hearing from you, and to know that you are doing fine as ever in school.
Sorry, I’m a little late writing to you but the kids and wife has been under the weather, and its been keeping me quite busy.
As far as our team is concerned I think we
have a great chance to finish up there in that first division.
Everybody is really working hard. We have some real good rookies this year also.
Give my regards to all especially your wonderful mother.
Your Pal,
Ernie Banks
Dear Jack,
It’s beautiful
It’s wonderful
It’s Great!
It’s the best thing that can happen to an athlete.
