Four Horsemen

From 1922–1924, Knute Rockne’s Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team sported a record of 27-2-1 and claimed the 1924 National Championship. The leaders of those teams were their four backfield stars — Don Miller (RHB), Elmer Layden (FB), Jerry Crowley (LHB) and Harry Stuhldreher (QB) — nicknamed the “Four Horsemen” by legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice. This photo, signed by the four players, was staged by Notre Dame’s student publicity aide George Strickler who used horses from a local livery.
