U.S. Presidents & First Ladies
Grace Coolidge
Born in 1879, Grace Goodhue was a teacher at a school for the deaf in Massachusetts when she spotted Calvin Cooldige shaving through a window across the road. The pair married in 1905, and Calvin entered politics soon thereafter. In her time as First Lady (1923–1929) Coolidge welcomed tens of thousands of visitors to the White House and she was a big fan of baseball, animals and Jazz Age entertainers. She also advocated for the deaf and raised money for the Red Cross. In this 1937 letter she regretted being unable to attend a function. Grace Coolidge passed in 1957.
