U.S. Presidents & First Ladies
Grover Cleveland
Grover Cleveland, born in 1837 in New Jersey, was a lawyer who became mayor of Buffalo, governor of New York and the first U.S. president to serve non-consecutive terms (22nd and 24th). Cleveland gained recognition for his honesty and reform-minded approach, focusing on civil service reform, fiscal conservatism and limited government. His opposition to tariffs led to a loss in the 1888 election, but he returned and won again in 1892. After leaving office in 1897, Cleveland retired quietly, remembered for his integrity and independence. This note from 1905 settled a hotel bill from a fishing trip.
August 11, 1905
Mr. Dear Mr. Robertson:
Richard and I arrived home an hour or two ago, after a very pleasant fishing trip to Chocanwa, for which we are largely indebted to your kind care and management.
I sent you by check for the bill I obtained at the hotel office ($10).
Thanking you for all you did for me and my dear boy, I am.
Yours very truly,
Grover Cleveland
