Jackie Robinson

The legendary Jackie Robinson appeared on the cover of Sport magazine in October 1952 along with his good friend, Harold “Pee Wee” Reese. The pair, whose trailblazing friendship was memorialized in a statue in Brooklyn, signed the magazine cover. Robinson and Reese helped lead the Brooklyn Dodgers to their first and only World Series title in 1955. Sometime in the mid-1950s, Robinson wrote to a Dodgers fan in Milwaukee named “Jerry” and invited him to meet up with him the next time Brooklyn played the Braves.

Dear Jerry,

Thanks for your nice letter. We really appreciate a Dodger fan in Milwaukee, it’s such a rare thing. I am sure you must go through plenty when you root for us but don’t quit.

I would like very much to at least say hello when we play your city so why not give me a call at the Schroeder when we play there.

Give my regards to your wife and I hope you have many wonderful years ahead of you. When and if you will please remind me of this letter? We get quite a few and sometimes we forget.

Sincerely,

Jackie Robinson
