U.S. Presidents & First Ladies

Lady Bess Truman

Born in 1885, Elizabeth “Bess” Wallace and Harry S. Truman were childhood acquaintances in Independence, Missouri, but their relationship did not bloom until they were in their 30s. They married in 1919 and as First Lady (1945–1953), Bess Truman revitalized the White House social scene following World War II and was a trusted advisor to her husband. In this undated letter, she mentions arranging a meeting. Living to age 97, the longest of any former First Lady, Bess had ample opportunity for meetings before she died in 1982 at 97 and is the longest lived First Lady.

Dear Mr. Tucker,

I meant to write you days ago — but have been mighty busy. I am most certainly going to be in W. the last of October and shall be very

happy to see Mrs. Tucker.

Am hoping to have a gallon or two of gas so I can take her to some of the interesting places she may want to see.

My telephone number is Woodley 3690 — and I shall be expecting her to call me before the month is gone — and shall be looking forward to it.

I wish you were coming too.

Most Sincerely,

Lady Bess Truman
