Ice Giants
Lord Stanley
Hockey champions in North America date back decades before the National Hockey League was formed in 1917. In 1892 a trophy was commissioned for the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and named after Lord Stanley of Preston, at the time the governor general of Canada (the English monarch’s representative in the country), who donated the impressive award to the country’s champion amateur ice hockey team. Professional hockey clubs were made eligible in 1906, and the Stanley Cup became the championship trophy of the NHL in 1926 with each team’s players etching their names into its rings.
