U.S. Presidents & First Ladies

Richard Nixon

Richard Nixon, born in 1913 in California, served as a lawyer, Navy officer in World War II and quickly rose from congressman to senator to the vice presidency under Eisenhower. After narrowly losing the 1960 presidential election, Nixon rallied to win in 1968. He opened relations with China, advanced détente with the Soviet Union and ended U.S. combat in Vietnam. His presidency ended with the Watergate scandal and his resignation in 1974. In retirement, Nixon became an author and influential elder statesman until his death in 1994, the era from which this bereavement letter was written.

Dear Moya,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Bill’s passing.

He was truly an engineering genius and a fine human being whose friendship I always shall cherish.

I know you will carry on his work with great competence in the years ahead. Nothing would please him more than to know you were doing so.

Pat joins me in sending our warmest regards/.

Sincerely,

Dick Nixon
