U.S. Presidents & First Ladies
Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan, born in 1911 in Illinois, began as a sportscaster and actor, famously portraying George Gipp and earning the nickname “the Gipper.” In 1961, he wrote this letter of regret as a union president just starting his political career. Reagan served as California’s governor (1967–1975) and became the 40th U.S. president (1981–1989), surviving an assassination attempt in 1981 with resilience and his trademark humor. He championed conservative economic policies known as “Reaganomics” and strengthened the military to challenge the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Reagan passed in 2004, becoming an icon of leadership and conservative values for decades.

Mrs. Fred Lowey
Dear Mrs. Lowey,
As you perhaps know I am speaking in Long Beach for the 18th Congressional District Republicans Feb. 11 the Lincoln Day Dinner.
Because of this and a number of speaking dates from now through spring I don’t believe I can accept your invitation to meet with the women’s group.
Please accept my regrets and my thanks for your kindness in asking me.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan
