U.S. Presidents & First Ladies

William Henry Harrison

William Henry Harrison, born in 1773 in Virginia, gained national fame for defeating Native American forces at the Battle of Tippecanoe and later in the War of 1812. This 1819 letter served as an introduction for a member of his “military family.” Elected as the ninth president in 1840 with his slogan “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too,” Harrison delivered a long inaugural address, caught pneumonia and died after only one month in office, leaving the shortest presidency in American history. His sudden death deeply shocked the nation. Consequently, John Tyler became the first Vice President to directly ascend to the presidency.

Dear Sir,

I have great pleasure in introducing to you Col. Chrs S. Todd, an officer of the late war and a member of my military family. I know none worthier of your regard but should you be able to render him any assistance in the business which takes him to Washington for it will confer a favor on your friend.
